I seem to be posting a lot here lately. Anyhoo, I can't find the safely remove hardware icon in the system tray. I really should start using it because I have a few data storage devices.

the bottom line to this is that you don't need to worry about it. People always say you need to click it and safely remove the hardware, but you never need to unlike in linux where it doesn't actually write the data until you want to eject it. so in this case it is necessary but otherwise don't even worry about it. it is like UCA for vista. it is a useless cause.

ah thanks, that makes me feel better as well. I never click on the icon as I can never find it either.

If i find it, i click it, if i don't, well, guess my jump drives not getting ejected safely from the system.

The reason I'm looking for it is because when I disconnected my external hard drive, I got this message saying i lost all my data. I ended up not losing any that I know of, but just in case.

It's probably not showing up because you have it set to hide inactive icons. Go to your task bar or system tray by shift tabbing, or tabbing, on your desktop. After that, use an alt enter to get into task bar properties. You'll want to look for a checkbox that says "notification area, hide inactive icons." Uncheck this box and click ok. After that it should show up. Hope that helps.

Correction. It tells you that you might've lost your data, when in all actuality, you didn't. Windows synchronizes automatically as I've said, as well some linux distros do not, but some do like ubuntu. Mac is another one I believe is ASynchronis. I ignore it every time and have never lost a thing.

Same here. Find it, click on it. Don't find it, well, who gives a shiny shitee?

To post four your jump drive is getting safely ejected from your system even without you clicking on safely remove hardware. I remove my jump drive from my system all the time without clicking safely remove hardware and I have no problems.

Not all the time. I had a U3 drive, and evertime i'd take it out without safely ejecting it, it would tell me next time i plugged it in, same with my Lexar drive.

Hmmm.
I know about the U3 thing, I made it stop.
If I find the icon, I click it, if I don't well, I just unplug whatever storage device I'm using.
It's bettter to be safe than sorry...

Well I've never worried about it, however, if it's there, it might be there for a reason. i always worry about losing my hard drive, or anything on it, and little things have happened before, plus sometimes my computer gets messed up and i'm not sure if it's because I'm not removing it safely. So I think I might try what Singer of Songs suggested with the system tray, although I've never seen that icon before.

I stopped the lexar one by removing the JDSecure part on it, and the U3 i had to remove it, because it wouldn't work on the mack otherwise.

U3 is bull everyone hates it. it just gets in the way. So you honestly think windows has stuff there because you think it actually does something. Looks like vista is for you then. It's full of stuff that has no purpose or function. Namely UAC or Windows Defender. It just fools you into thinking if you don't have it running you'll die. But then again, there are plenty of people who have shit running and they still think it does something when all it does is take up resources. A computer is for computing people, and most of you don't get that. A computer isn't for sexy looking bloated o/s's. If i buy a quad core, I don't intend on half the resources being gobbled up by an o/s. The reason I bought that quad core is to actually use those resources. Just because one buys a quad core with vista, doesn't mean it will run like a quad core at all. No where on the pc box does it say "this box will run with full resources available". I will never understand it. Vista for me is only a toy. This xp laptop went through some registry tweaks, and xplite/services config nearly half are disabled, and this thing runs like a pro. 5% cpu usage with about 17 processes after a clean install with no aps. Try doing that to vista. The thing probably wouldn't even boot. Any more than 20 processes and I'm starting to question.

I'll agree with that.

Thanks for the inactive icons tip. Now I'm seeing stuff i never realized I had.
